It is beocming increasingly popular to employ staff on a short term contract or freelance work as opposed to having them on the payroll.  This is known as a ‘gig economy’.  This is often seen across certain sectors, for example, delivery services, taxis, construction companies and video producers.  Instead of being paid a regular wage, the gig economy gets paid for the ‘gigs’ they do, such as making a delivery or a taxi journey.  Miles Smith Insurance Group have a handy guide to this here.
